SMASHPROOF win Most Popular Digital Single Artist award:
Thursday, 24 September, 2009 - 00:02
Telecom announce fifth annual Mobile Music awards winners
The 2009 Telecom Mobile Music Awards were announced last night at a function at the Long Room in Auckland. Artists, bands and record labels gathered to celebrate the success of their peers in the digital mobile music category. While the awards ceremony was attended by some of New Zealand's music industry heavyweights, noticeably absent were any Kanye-esque antics!
This year a number of local and international artists were recognised:
* Tiki Taane took home the award for Highest Selling Ringtone and Caller Tune (NZ) with his chart-topping track Always On My Mind. Tiki also scored Most Popular Artist Ringtone & Caller Tune (NZ).
* The award for Highest Selling NZ Digital Single went to Smashproof featuring Gin Wigmore for their legendary track Brother and Smashproof picked up the Most Popular Digital Single Artist (NZ) as well.
* Top-selling artist Lady GaGa was honoured for the Highest Selling Digital Single (International) for her song Poker Face and was also awarded Most Popular Overall Digital Single Artist (International).
* Six Gold and Platinum awards were presented throughout the evening to record labels for tracks that have been downloaded over 5,000 and 10,000 times respectively.
Telecom's CEO Retail, Alan Gourdie said the awards have gone from strength to strength in the five years since their launch, with this year being particularly special given the launch of Telecom's XT Mobile Network.
"The launch of XT in May certainly pushed Telecom's music store into another realm, and we've seen customers react positively to the changes we've made and the choice of music at their finger tips. We are pleased to see New Zealand artists ranking so highly in our charts," he said.
Adam Holt Managing Director Universal Music said the mobile phone has completely changed the way we access music.
"From Full Track Singles to Music Videos, Ringtones and Caller Tunes, the mobile phone delivers music to fans how, when and wherever they want it. It was great to join the Telecom music team at the Telecom Mobile Music Awards last night and help them celebrate the year's biggest successes in the mobile music space," he said.
The value of digital music sales in New Zealand rose by over 20% last year with mobile music contributing nearly half of this market (44%). Based on current industry-wide weekly tracking, digital sales are growing at an even greater rate in 2009. Currently around 100,000 full-track singles are legally downloaded by New Zealand consumers every week via a combination of online and mobile services.
Telecom is committed to the ongoing recognition of musicians in the Mobile Music market given the increasing importance of digital music sales in the overall industry.
As part of this commitment to supporting emerging New Zealand musicians, Telecom closed the awards ceremony with performances by up and coming Auckland artists Erakah and Haylee Fisher.
About the awards:
The Telecom Mobile Music Awards acknowledge the achievements of both local and international musicians in the New Zealand Mobile Music market. They recognise the number of Full Track Downloads, Tru-Tone Ringtones and Caller Tune sales that an artist has achieved over the previous 12 months.

R.I.P GRANDMASTER ROC RAIDA:
My first ever marketing project at Loud Records was the X-ecutioners album. I had been running point as the head of international there until i was appointed domestic marketing position. It was a dream com true to work with these four talented and groundbreaking brothers and they trusted me to work their project, which meant the world to me. The end result being that together with Sean C we walked away with a groundbreaking album and a huge single. We spent a lot of time together at that time and traveled to Europe touring as well as in the U.S on the Linkin Park tour; and to events like South By Southwest, the X-Games, the ESPN Awards and an event in LA where MTV honored Aerosmith.
One thing i always noticed about Raida in those days was that he was a fan of this music shit first and foremost. He was always humble around other artists and was always looking to get things signed by other acts to give to his kids, and his approach to get this done was always on the humble.
But this story goes deeper... after Loud folded we always kept in touch. Raida was always a stand up guy to me, and he later went on to mentor my ex-wifes DJ career. Raida always looked out for my international DJ buddies when they were in NY, as he always embraced DJ's from all over the planet and always recognized talent from around the globe regardless of borders, boundaries and race.
He was managed by a very close friend, so we never ever lost touch with one another. It was through this relationship that he took my man Ethical on the road as his hypeman throughout Asia a few years back. He was happy to do it for me, just coz he could; and he went on to contribute to Eth's first single, again; just coz he could.
He was a great man and most importantly... he was a friend.
I already miss knowing that he is not alive somewhere on this planet.
R.I.P my brother, i love you.
